APP is proud to announce the addition of the KBA RAPIDA 106-4 + L SW2, which prints on a wide range of paper, from 40 Gsm up to heavy board 1mm thickness at 18.000 sheets per hour and water-based varnish. An eco-friendly machine that requires a low consumption of alcohol and energy, it also has a special system for powder removal and can print two colors, recto-verso, in one pass.

APP is proud to announce its purchase of the sixth CTP machine from BASYPRINT. It is worthwhile noting that APP was the first printing house in the Middle East to install a CTP machine back in 2002. This new BASYPRINT 860 CTP Machine will enhance the quality of the printed products and will increase APP platemaking capacity. Noting that it is a fully automated CTP system with a plate manager and online processor.

The installation of this new CTP was successfully done during July 2018.

APP took part in “Lebanon’s collaboration for the SDGs” that took place in AUB on January 27, 2017.  In 2015, APP adhered to UNGC initiative and has been implementing the 10 principles in a more efficient way.  It is our policy to protect and preserve the environment, in fulfilling this responsibility; we adhere to some fundamental principles and we took many environmental initiatives. We also took process related measures which include: new offset printing machines, ventilation and air conditioning, and renewable energy and lighting retrofit.  Our ongoing and future projects include: centralizing our utility systems and building renovation.

APP has earned for the third year a certification from the Ministry of Environment with the presence of his Excellency Mr. El Machnouk and Mr. Luca Renda, UNDP Country Director; concerning gas emission.

The United Nations Development Programme and Green Mind NGO launched a new initiative, Lebanon Climate Act, which aims at catalyzing the involvement of the private sector in the wider climate change community and encouraging them to contribute in a profitable manner to combat climate change.

“As Arab Printing Press being a leading institution reputed for its social and environmental engagement”; APP was invited by UNDP to join Lebanon Climate Act and be among the first members to sign the Act.

We are glad to announce that APP joined the movement, during an executive reception organized by UNDP and Green Mind on Saturday June 18, 2016, at Saint Joseph University (USJ).

As part of APP’s policy and ongoing commitment to work cooperatively with others to achieve optimum environmental objectives; Arab Printing Press signed the Green Pledge of “Green Business Initiative”: this is an NGO project undertaken by "Lebanon Opportunities" and InfoPro Center for Economic Information; the mission of this project is to inform and enable the business community on ways to become environmentally friendly in an economically feasible manner and to provide companies and institutions with practical tools and independent support that would have a positive contribution to their profits when engaging in an environmentally sustainable conduct.

The environmental initiatives of Arab Printing Press were exposed on the project’s website;” by signing the pledge and publishing the green initiatives APP influence other organizations from the private and public sectors to follow its lead”.

Arab Printing Press released its new branding identity at the event of the season, which was hosted at APP headquarters.  The event witnessed several entertainment stations some of which include live graffiti, a violinist who swept the guests of their feet with her music’s charm and beauty, and a stencil corner where guests could spray paint their favorite quote.

As the sun set down, the guests enjoyed fruity drinks and finger food as they swayed to upbeat music.  The event concluded with a memorable speech by Mr. Elie Raphael and an animation that took the crowd by storm. 

In line with APP commitment to the International Standards; we are proud to announce that on May 24, 2016, we started the transition process of APP Quality Management System from ISO 9001:2008 to ISO 9001:2015.

APP Quality Management System has been certified to ISO 9001 since December 2007.This transition to ISO 900:2015 will be another step to demonstrate our commitment toward continual quality improvement and customer satisfaction.

In line with our commitment to continuous improvement and welfare of the society; APP started beginning of June 2014, the implementation of the Environmental Management System in compliance with the ISO 14001:2004 standards. Our quality and environmental policy is as in the attached document.

We are proud to announce that as of July 8th 2011, Arab Printing Press has officially become an FSC^TM Certified Company, which makes us the first Printing Press Company in Lebanon to achieve the FSC^TM Certification FSC-C106903, in order to help and protect the Environment and the Forests. FSC Certification provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption of forest products, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment as well as providing ongoing business value. APP Clients who are keen on environmental issues can now utilize FSC^TM Certified Paper, which APP can provide upon availability, and print as per the obtained Certificate.

Arab Printing Press is pleased to announce the acquisition of a print manufacturing plant in Ivory Coast, West Africa. As part of our ongoing export and international supply strategy, the plant based in the capital Abidjan, will initially support production of existing in-country business being generated through our local sales office, with the mid-term objective of developing new opportunities throughout West Africa and the continent as a whole. Our Chairman, Elie Raphael, commented “these are extremely exciting times for the Group, as we continue to grow our export business and extend our manufacturing ability throughout the EMEA regions”. He added, “APP looks forward to the challenge of continuing to support our growing client base, predominately in the education sector, as they seek reliable and technically competent suppliers, able to provide consistent product quality whilst meeting increasingly pressured schedule commitments”. The Ivory Coast plant has four colors, two colors, and one color sheet fed capability, with supporting binding lines, and the Board of Directors has indicated that there will be additions to both the print capacity and the bindery by the end of 2013. An in-house digital facility supports short run, and print on demand requirements.

Without exports, printing companies will not survive in our region Elie Raphael of Arab Printing Press talks to Shilpa Jasani about the challenges facing the printing industry in Lebanon, while dreaming of expanding his business into other Middle Eastern and African countries. One of the most memorable moments in my career is when APP won an order to print textbooks for the Ministry of Education in Iraq for $11 million,” says Stanford-educated chairman and general manager of Arab Printing Press, Elie Raphael. Armed with a bachelors degree in industrial engineering from the University of Cincinnati and a masters degree, also in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University, USA, Raphael explains his career path, “My father Joe Raphael started the Arab Printing Press in 1968, graduating from the paper distribution business which he established in Lebanon in 1964. I joined the family business in 1995. The industrial engineering background helped me a lot in my career in the printing industry as its objective is to efficiently manage the flow of materials, production, people and make the right investments. APP was established with 3 staff members and now employs 130. Initially, we operated out of 400 sqm facility, while now our shop floor covers an area of 5,500 sqm.” Through their branch offices in West Africa and United Kingdom and Lebanon headquarters, Arab Printing Press services clients in Lebanon, Arab nations, Europe and Africa, exporting school books to Iraq and magazines to the Gulf countries. About 60% of the printshop’s business is for the export markets. “Lebanon was traditionally the printing hub in the Middle East. It still has a value-add advantage as far as quality of printing and binding, especially for hard cover books production. Lebanon is also well known for its efficiency in delivering jobs on time, and that too at competitive prices. Having said that, the regional printing industry is facing challenges, especially with the e-books industry contributing to reduced demand for printed books. Furthermore, the worldwide recession has affected the demand for advertising which directly impacts the demand for printing products.” In December 2011, APP won the ‘Golden Merit Award’ from Tatweej Academy for Excellence & Quality award in association with the Arab Organization for Administrative development. “The success of our company resides in the export strategy that we have implemented. We export books to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. In 2007, APP acquired ISO 9001 certification, and also won the distinction of becoming the first printing press in Lebanon to receive the FSC certification. Dwelling on the changes he has seen, sports enthusiast Raphael emphasizes, “The industry has moved from CTF to CTP, the color management softwares, the new digital printing machines. The internet helps us execute jobs faster and with more efficiency, as far as contacting clients, making quotations, receiving files to print and such others is concerned. Also, with the increases in the number of presses in the region, the printing industry is facing difficulties and a situation of excess supply over demand has been created. The current market is very difficult and it will be a challenge for printers to survive the recession in the region, with dwindling local demand. Without exports, printing companies will not survive. We, too, faced difficulties when our active shareholders who were running the company left, in 1998 to start a competing business. However, hard work and perseverance helped us fend off the challenge.” With the financial slowdown contributing to increased length of credit being offered by print shops, Raphael adds, “The credit period is getting longer due to the economic recession and that is impacting all businesses. This is very harmful as it affects cash-flow and increases bank interests expenses.” On the contentious issue of retaining employee loyalty, Raphael opines, “All APP employees are Lebanese. It is of course a challenge to retain them but we offer them a career plan besides employee benefits such as social security, transportation, schooling, overtime, and bonuses which helps reducing staff turnover.” Dreaming of having several production facilities beyond the boundaries of Lebanon, in Middle East and Africa within 5 years, Raphael concludes by cautioning other print shops, “Look for new markets, diversify your products and services, and minimize cost.”

“The Energy cost component is for us a factor that we can control with goodwill, team effort, proper energy management and implementation of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy measures. We invested by installing 140 kWc solar photovoltaic station for RENEWABLE ENERGY production of 200MWH of electricity per year and implemented LIGHTING RETROFIT by installing LED lighting in the entire factory (5.000 Sqm)” as per Mr. Elie Raphael (Chairman of APP).

For the second year, APP has been granted a certificate from the Ministry of Environment and the United Nations Development Program for reporting on APP’s greenhouse gas emissions.  The award was granted through his Excellency Mr. Mohamad Al Mashnouk for the actions taken to reduce gas emissions in our industry.
